“It’s a long, long journey so stay by my side. When I walk through the storm you’ll be my guide, be my guide. If they gave me a fortune, my treasure would be small. I could lose it all tomorrow and never mind at all, but if I should lose your love, dear, I don’t know what I’d do for I know I’d never find another you.”
This song released 1964 by The Seekers has been the theme song for Marriage Encounter, an outreach that has been strengthening marriages since 1952 when Fr. Gabriel Calvo of Spain first began developing a series of talks for couples.
I recently completed a news story about Marriage Encounter for Atlanta’s Georgia Bulletin. My husband and I celebrate 25 years of marriage so it was a welcomed reminder of our own journey with Marriage Encounter, which started in 2000.
Along with Marriage Encounter, I’d credit heading to church each week as well as practicing Natural Family Planning (or fertility awareness management) for the richness and joy I experience in my marriage and with our three kids. Life is good!
If you’re not familiar with NFP, here’s a Goodness Reigns film that speaks more about the life-giving, and even healing, practice. (Cecelia and Darryl tell their story, too.)
